One Health Brucella Surveillance in India
Project Profile

One Health Brucella Surveillance in India

Background
Location(s)
India
Indication(s)
Brucellosis
Situation overview

Challenge

Estimating the prevalence of brucellosis in both animal and human populations due to the size and diversity of India combined with a complex economy of small-scale farmers

How we are helping

We are currently implementing a study that was funded to develop an efficient One Health surveillance approach to assess the epidemiology of Brucella in multiple transmission settings in India.

Our roles include:
  • Collaborating with international partners to generate novel scientific data to improve our ability to identify hotspots of emerging and/or zoonotic pathogen transmission
  • Conducting an initial assessment of laboratory needs, baseline proficiency, and management of biosafety policies
  • Developing and providing targeted training on laboratory and field (including veterinary health professionals and farmers) biosafety and biosecurity (BS&S) practices (appropriate PPE use, sample collection, sample transport, reporting) and standard operating procedures for investigation of abortion cases in cattle
  • Ongoing mentorship of laboratory personnel to become trainers for the sustainment of capabilities

Anticipated outcomes

This study will:
  • Advance the capacity to address emerging and/or zoonotic pathogens
  • Develop a network of professionals prepared to investigate emerging and/or zoonotic pathogens in India
