Assessment of COVID-19 Related Policies in Public School Districts Using Biosurveillance Methodology by EpiPointe
Project Profile

Assessment of COVID-19 Related Policies in Public School Districts Using Biosurveillance Methodology

Background
Location(s)
United States
Indication(s)
COVID-19
Situation overview
To address the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the United States rapidly developed policies to protect the health of their staff and students. These policies were modified as we gained a greater understanding of the disease and to minimize any potential negative impact on education outcomes, while ensuring health and safety.

Challenge

Evaluating the effectiveness of different COVID-19 policies given the differences between regions and communities

How we helped

We used a quantitative biosurveillance approach for the uniform assessment of COVID-19 health and safety policy data for public school districts.
The integrated data science approach consisted of:
  • Traditional biosurveillance methodologies
  • Epidemiologic assessment
  • Data engineering capabilities, a tailored methodology was developed to aggregate, vet, and analyze publicly available school district COVID-19
    policy data

Outcomes

This approach allowed us to:
  • Transform qualitative information into quantifiable measurements of data
  • Develop a quantitative characterization of policy information that can be compared across a region or community
